Abstract This essay was written to introduce the book launch of a volume of essays on an exceptional art historian of the twentieth century. The launch was unusual in that the two intellectuals who launched the book, one a classicist and the other a cultural historian, are both blessed with longevity and remembered encounters with Wind when they were undergraduates in the sixties that inspired them for the rest of their lives.
